What to Do if Your AC Is Not Working

Signs to Look Out For:

  • Noise – strange noises can be dirty filters or grilles not fitted properly; if banging or grinding, it's recommended to switch off the unit immediately and consult a qualified technician.
  • Smoke / Steam – burning plastic or rubber smell means switching off immediately. During winter, it can be common for steam to come from the outdoor unit caused by the defrost cycle, which melts and evaporates frozen condensation into the air.
  • Water from the outdoor unit – during the heating and cooling cycles, refrigerated air cons are designed to remove moisture from the air, which can cause condensation.
  • Power Surges – If there has been a power failure fault, temperature fault, or no cold air is blowing, you might like to try switching off the power at the fuse box.

Common Problems

  • Unit is Unplugged

    • Check all plugs to ensure they are correctly connected to the power sockets to ensure no partial dislodgement.
    • Plugs can easily be knocked out of the wall, so ensure it's the first thing you check.
  • Blown Circuit Breakers

    • Circuit breakers and fuses are often to blame when an air conditioner stops working, especially older homes that are overloaded if sharing a circuit with other appliances such as fridges, microwaves etc.
    • Check to see if the circuit breaker has tripped or if a fuse has been blown.
    • A tripped switch can be located in your home meter box and easily be flicked back to position.
    • If the circuit breaker or fuse has blown, you need a qualified technician to fix it.
    • DO NOT attempt to undertake any electrical work yourself.
  • Blocked Filters

    • Inadequate maintenance can quickly lead to a breakdown which potentially can cause increases in your energy bills as the unit is working harder than it should.
    • If you leave the filters unclean, the compressor or fans can fail prematurely, so cleaning filters periodically is essential.
    • It is recommended to clean washable filters annually, but you might like to clean before peak seasons – summer and winter – to help run efficiently through these times.
    • Dirty filters can also lead to short cycling –running for a short time and then turning off again, which can benefit from a good clean.
  • Wrong Settings

    • Having the correct temperatures set is key.
    • If your AC is blowing air but still isn't cold, ensure your unit is set to cooling mode on the controller – typically indicated with a snowflake symbol or the words cool or cold.
    • If it is already on this mode, check the temperature is low enough for the unit to know it needs to cool – you can check this by dropping the temperature to 16°c on a hot day to check if the air feels cool before turning it to an optimal temp such as 23°c.
    • This goes for heating as well – if you're using the AC to heat in winter but it's blowing cold air, check the mode on your controller.
    • Key setting to remember – snowflake = cooling, sun = heating.
